After the morning downhill portion of the event, Norwegian Jansrud was sitting pretty atop the standings with Hirscher way down in the bottom half of the standings in 31st place, 3.16 seconds further back.
However, the Austrian produced a storming slalom run to leap to the top of the table with a winning time of 2:36.10 minutes.
His was Jansrud's third World Championship gold medal, while Jansrud still waits for his maiden title after he had to settle for silver, 0.18 seconds behind.
And completing the podium with bronze was defending champion American Ted Ligety, although there was no doubting who the star of the show was.
"It is unbelievable," 25-year-old Hirscher said. "My plans for these championships were, in the best case, to catch one medal, it doesn't matter which colour.
"So I reached my goals and everything that happens now is just super good."
