Lindsey Vonn returned to World Cup action but she could do little to stop Slovenian Tina Maze from powering to victory in this season’s downhill opener at Lake Louise, Canada.
American Vonn was making her returned to the World Cup circuit following a second knee operation that kept her out of the Sochi Olympics.
And in her first race since last December where she failed to finish a downhill event in Val d'Isere, Vonn was eighth.
However the star of the show was Maze who claimed victory in 1:50.98 minutes, with Austrian Anna Fenninger and Liechtenstein's Tina Weirather second and third respectively.
The result means Maze sits atop the World Cup standings on 288 points, with Austrian Kathrin Zettel 38 behind in second and American Mikaela Shiffrin third on 209.
And in the men's downhill event at Beaver Creek, America, Kjetil Jansrud of Norway extended his World Cup streak to three straight victories as he finished first in 1:40,17.
Switzerland's Beat Feuz was second 0.54 seconds further back and third went to American Steven Nyman.
Jansrud has opened up a sizeable gap atop the World Cup as he sits pretty on 316 points, his nearest challenger being Austrian Marcel Hirscher on 180.
