The 30-year-old is just a tenth adrift of provisional silver after a blistering first run on a complex course.
He must crack an Austrian clean sweep to get onto the podium after the dominant Marcel Hirscher was trailed by compatriots Marco Schwarz and Michael Matt.
Hirscher clocked a lightning 46.43 seconds, with his team-mates lagging 0.43s and 0.48s respectively. Ryding is 0.53s adrift.
Ryding heads a queue of skiers hoping to sneak onto the podium, with 13 men within a second of Hirscher – including Norway’s fancied Henrik Kristoffersen, who is sixth despite making a notable error midway through his first run.
The second run starts at 12:00 GMT.
