CJ Ujah beats world champion Justin Gatlin, wins 100m in Zurich

Britain’s CJ Ujah secured the biggest win of his career by beating a strong field, including world champion Justin Gatlin, to win the 100 metres in the Zurich Diamond League.

The 23-year-old clocked 9.97 seconds, edging a photo finish with Ivorian Ibrahim Meitre (also 9.97s). Ronnie Baker of the United States took third in 10.01s, with compatriot Justin Gatlin (10.04s) fading into fourth.

Jamaica’s former world record holder Asafa Powell (10.11s) finished a disappointing seventh, with the second Brit Adam Gemili (10.13s) in eighth.

Ujah ran the first leg at the IAAF World Championships in London as GB stunned the United States and Jamaica to win 4x100m relay gold – a race that was intended to act as Usain Bolt’s perfect farewell, but ended in a crumpled injured heap.

The great Jamaican has since retired from athletics, with the stage now set for the next generation to come through – and with Ujah boasting five Diamond League wins, he looks a serious medal contender at major championships in the near future.
