Having finally downed his discus-wielding nemesis Virgilijus Alekna, Estonian Gerd Kanter now has his sights set on the world record.
Kanter, 28, had only beaten twice world and twice Olympic champion Alekna once in 45 meetings heading into Osaka and his surprise gold medal has given him a new lease of life.
"Now it is my aim to break the world record. I will go for this mark on Sept. 15 in Helsingborg," he said.
It was in the Swedish city that he established his personal best of 73.38m last year, which puts him in third position on the all-time list behind Germany's Jurgen Schult, whose world record of 74.08 has stood for 21 years, and Alekna, who has a lifetime best of 73.88.
"At 28, I am still young for this event," he said.
