'Iron Mike' appears to have been angered primarily by Mayweather's repeated insistence that he is the greatest boxer of all time, even greater than Muhammad Ali.
"He’s very delusional,” Tyson said.
"If he was anything like Ali he would take his kids to school by himself…
"He’s a very small, scared man.
"Greatness is not guarding yourself from the people. Greatness is being accepted by the people.”
It is fresh backing for Manny Pacquiao ahead of the fight, with Tyson having previously predicted that the Filipino would have the measure of his opponent.
"Floyd doesn't throw anywhere near 100 punches a round. He is more of a scientific fighter, he really plots a lot, he poses whereas Pacquiao is feinting and moving around," he said.
"That's just my opinion, Pacquiao has perpetual motion he's all over the god damn place."
