Prior to the Games Angerer blew away his rivals with no less than five stunning World Cup victories including the 15km in Kuusamo, Finland and the 30km in Canmore Canada and presently lies first overall in the World Cup standings.
The German will no doubt want to salvage his Olympic campaign with the top prize.
As the race is in the freestyle technique one can not ignore Frenchman Vittoz's chances of coming away with Gold.
Vittoz had a very reasonable start to the World Cup season and occupies fourth place making it to the podium on four occasions.
Italy's Pietro Piller Cottrer is also a likely candidate to make it up the steps onto the podium.
The Italian has proved his worth at the Games so far with his bronze medal in the pursuit and a stellar performance winning gold in the team relay.
Norway's Frode Estil - who won silver in the men's pursuit - won the most recent 50km race during the world cup in Oberstdorf but will have to produce something special to get himself in the mix on Sunday..
The winner of this race will be placed among prestigious company as the last time this race was held as a free technique it was Bjoern Dahlie at the Nagano Games in 1988 who came away with gold.
