Joaquim Rodriguez takes stage three of Tour of the Basque Country

Katusha’s Joaquim Rodriguez won the third stage of the Tour of the Basque Country on Wednesday, taking him second in the overall standings for the six stage event.

The 35-year-old Spaniard, who won the 2014 Volta a Catalunya, was part of a three-man sprint to the finishing line with Sergio Luis Henao of Team Sky and Movistar’s Nairo Quintana.
Rodriguez, nicknamed “El Purito”, broke away with the Colombian pair with three kilometres left of the 170km race from Vitoria-Gasteiz.
As the trio descended into Zumarraga, Henao started the sprint but was overtaken by Rodriguez while Quintana claimed third.
Rodriguez had not enjoyed a stage win since his victory in Catalunya more than a year ago but has now opened his account for 2015.
Henao leads the event overall, however, with Rodriguez second and Nairo Quintana third, while last year's runner-up Michal Kwiatkowski is fourth.
