Javier Fernandez became the first Spaniard to claim gold at the World Figure Skating Championships after upsetting the odds in Shanghai, China.
Fernandez, who grew up training on a Madrid ice rink that is now a restaurant, went back on the Shanghai ice on Saturday trailing Olympic champion Yuzuru Hanyu by 2.46 points after the short program.
But in the free skate Hanyu could only finish third while Fernandez was once again second, meaning the Spaniard took gold with a total score of 273.90.
In the end, Hanyu had to settle for silver with a score of 271.08, while Denis Ten of Kazakhstan won bronze.
The women's title was taken by Russian Elizaveta Tuktamysheva, who strolled to the win as she finished 16.76 points ahead of Satoko Miyahara of Japan.
Only 2010 Olympic champion Yuna Kim captured a World Championship by a greater margin under the scoring system implemented in 2005.
And there was more for Russia to celebrate as Yelena Radionova claimed bronze.
