Bilic was already coping with the absence of new £20m signing Andre Ayew before Carroll picked up this fresh knock when he came on as a substitute in Thursday's Europa League game against Astra Giurgiu.
The Mirror reports that Carroll had been slightly under the weather prior to Monday's game against Chelsea but Bilic decided to give him game time in midweek, bringing him on after 63 minutes.
Carroll has had a chequered fitness history, including a medial collateral ligament injury that kept him out for most of 2015.
Bilic later confirmed the reports prior to the match against Bournemouth.
Carroll responded immediately afterwards, reassuring fans he would return soon.
