Spurs produced a performance that was enterprising and battling in equal measure, taking the lead against the European champions before being pegged back. The teams now share the lead in Group H, separated only by alphabetical order - and with Borussia Dortmund drawing with Apoel, it seems inconceivable that both won’t qualify for the last sixteen.
It took Spurs a while to get going, but after 20 minutes they began to threaten on the break, and their goal, though fortuitous, was not a great shock; Harry Winks did well in midfield, Serge Aurier crossed, and Raphael Varane turned into his own net while Harry Kane tried to flick home.

Madrid did not create much in response, but just when it looked like Spurs would take their lead into the half-time break, Aurier impetuously dived in on Toni Kroos just as he ran out of position inside the box Cristiano Ronaldo made no mistake from the spot.
The second half began in much the same way as the first, Madrid dominating, and on 54 minutes, Karim Benzema was certain that he'd put the home side ahead, heading Casemiro's cross firmly towards goal as Hugo Lloris dived the wrong way, only for the keeper to extend a leg and complete a fantastic save.
As Spurs grew in confidence once more, Kane and Christian Eriksen both missed fine chances to nab a winner, but a draw was a fair reflection of a fine match and, given the state of the group, enough to send both sides home happy.

TALKING POINT

Is Dele Alli the man for every occasion? Alli is an excellent player, but contributes little but goals, assists and needle. Fernando Llorente, on the other hand, holds the ball up superbly thanks to a deft touch and sharp eye, abilities that were extremely useful for a side whose defence needed an out-ball and some respite.

MAN OF THE MATCH

Davinson Sanchez (Spurs): Calm, composed and disciplined, he was on-hand to intercept, block and jockey as required.

PLAYER RATINGS

Real Madrid: Navas 7, Achraf 7, Ramos 5, Varane 5, Marcelo 5, Casemiro 6, Modric 6, Kroos 6, Isco 5, Benzema 5, Ronaldo 6. Subs: Asensio 6, Vasquez 6.
Tottenham Hotspur: Lloris 8, Aurier 6, Alderweireld 7, Sanchez 8, Dier 6, Vertonghen 7, Winks 7, Eriksen 6, Sissoko 5, Llorente 7, Kane 7. Subs: Rose 6, Son 6.

KEY MOMENTS

5’ - Brilliant from Madrid, Marcelo lifting a ball from the left touchline to the right side of the box, perfect for Achraf, who clips into the middle ... and with Vertonghen ballwatching, Ronaldo butts a header against the near post! Even so, Benzema should then score, with Lloris marooned, but he drags wide of the far post.

19’ - Spurs win a corner down the right, and Eriksen swings it out into Kane's path. With a run on Casemiro, he leaps early and high to thunk a header into the ground, which Navas does well to poke over the top off the bounce.

28’ - GOAL! Real Madrid 0-1 Spurs (Varane o.g.) Winks does well in midfield before Aurier goes down the right and crosses ... Kane backheels ... and the ball flicks off Varane and in!

42’ - PENALTY TO MADRID! This is lovely stuff, Marcelo into Casemiro, who lays off first-time to Benzema, and suddenly Kroos is picking a way into the box, whereupon Aurier dives in for a laugh and snaps into his shin. Aurier is booked.

43’ - GOAL! Real Madrid 1-1 Spurs (Ronaldo pen) Ronaldo opens his body and plants the ball into the right of the goal, halfway up, while Lloris dives the other way. That's 110 Champions League goals.

54’ - Isco wins a corner off Sanchez, and Madrid just work the ball back into play before, eventually, Casemiro crosses from the right ... Benzema is in light years! But though he heads firmly - he's certain he's scored - Lloris, in mid-dive, saves with his leg! Fantastic!

71’ - Aaaargh! Lovely from Spurs, Eriksen darting a pass into Llorente, who picks a ball between Ramos and Varane for Kane! Left side of the box, he telegraphs where he's going with his shot, opening his body, but Navas doesn't freeze as desired, diving full-length to push away! That's a great stop!

73’ - Aaaaargh! Eriksen has come to life! More woeful defending from Madrid allows Llorente to flick into his path, and driving into the box at inside-right, he opts for the near post, allowing Navas to palm away, shoulder-high, and behind.
