The President of the Russian Football Union, Nikolai Tolstykh, reveals that Fabio Capello faces the sack if Russia don’t make Euro 2016.
The former Juventus Coach is contracted to the Russian national team until the 2018 World Cup, to be held in Russia.
The 68-year-old earns a reported €8.3m per year, but his side are currently third in Group G, five points behind Austria in first.
“The contract provides the RFU with the possibility of sacking the coach in case of the team's poor results,” French newspaper L’Equipe reports Tolstykh as saying.
“The non-qualification of the team for Euro 2016 would be seen as a breach of contract.”
Capello has previously faced criticism from Russia’s sports minister, while the RFU has confessed that it struggles to afford his salary.
