Romelu Lukaku sinks Chelsea's season as Diego Costa sees red in FA Cup defeat to Everton

Romelu Lukaku scored twice, the first a wonder goal, as Everton beat Chelsea in a stormy FA Cup quarter-final which witnessed two red cards.

A low-key game exploded into life late in the second half when Lukaku picked up the ball on the left, held off two covering challengers to reach the edge of the box, wriggled beyond the remaining Chelsea defenders and dispatched the ball into the far corner. It was a stunning goal by the former Chelsea striker against his old club, and he doubled the Toffees’ advantage moments later with a tidy finish.

Diego Costa and Gareth Barry were both dismissed in the latter stages as Chelsea's last chance of silverware in a miserable season evaporated.

Costa appeared to bite Barry after going head-to-head with the Everton midfielder.

Everton now await the draw for the FA Cup semi-finals, while Chelsea’s season is effectively over – with the Blues out of all cup competitions and destined for a mid-table Premier League finish.

Did Diego Costa bite Gareth Barry? The Chelsea striker seemed to be on a mission to pick up his first red card as a Chelsea player, throwing himself into challenges right from the off and getting involved in countless clashes with Everton players. Both of his yellow cards were deserved, but television replays suggested that he went in to bite Barry after clashing heads. The reaction from the Everton midfielder suggested that maybe Costa thought better of it just at the moment that his teeth were primed for the plunge, but the images of the incident may yet get him in further trouble with the authorities.

Romelu Lukaku (Everton): The former Chelsea striker was kept quiet for much of the game, but it was always likely that he was going to make an impact at some point, and his opening goal was an astonishing display of strength, technique and composure. The finish for his second was less spectacular but equally impressive, dispatched with aplomb from a tight angle.

9’ – YELLOW: It took Costa less than a minute to get his 'revenge', clattering into Barry and picking up a booking for his trouble. The Everton fans were screaming for a red, but that would have been a little harsh.

77’ – GOAL! Everton 1-0 Chelsea: Romelu Lukaku scores an unbelievable goal to put Everton 1-0 up, weaving through the Chelsea defence and finishing into the bottom corner.

82’ – GOAL! Everton 2-0 Chelsea: Romelu Lukaku makes it 2-0 to Everton, beating the offside trap and sliding a shot between the legs of Courtois to send the Toffees on their way. Chelsea appeal for offside, but it's too late for that.

85’– RED: It goes from bad to worse for Chelsea. Diego Costa responds to a Barry tackle and butts heads with the Everton man. It's a second yellow for Costa and off he goes.

86’ – BITE? Remarkably that's the first time that Costa has been sent off for Chelsea. It looked like he was about to bite Barry too, but he thought better of it.

88’ – RED: Gareth Barry makes a needless challenge on Fabregas, tripping the Spaniard in central midfield, and that's his second yellow. It's a ridiculous decision by Barry.

Lukaku has scored 25 goals in 36 games in all competitions for Everton this season.

The Belgian’s goal tally is the highest by any Everton player since Gary Lineker’s 40-goal season in 1986.

Lukaku has scored in all of his five FA Cup appearances for Everton.

This was Guus Hiddink’s first taste of defeat in seven FA Cup games and the first time he has lost consecutive games as Chelsea manager.
