Former Sevilla coach Emery was appointed by the club last week after they parted company with Laurent Blanc despite winning three straight Ligue 1 titles under his tutelage, taking their run to four in a row overall.
The natural inference was that the club's Qatari owners were seeking a coach to help them make the breakthrough on the continental stage, particularly as Emery has led Sevilla to the Europa League title in each of the last three seasons.
The Spaniard said at a press conference broadcast live on psg.fr: "Expectations are very elevated at a big club like this, it is a club of winners.
"What is the limit of this team? There is none.
"The Champions League? Of course it is an important aim, but there are others. Our goal is to continue progressing, improving and growing.
"There is great optimism. With the current team, I think we can achieve big things."
Emery was the club's only choice to succeed Blanc, according to president Nasser Al-Khelaifi.
"He was the first option, the first choice, we didn't speak to anyone other than coach Unai," he said.
"He is a coach who works very, very hard, who is close with the players and who has developed young players - that is very important for us.
"We have everything we need in our coach."
The departure of talisman Zlatan Ibrahimovic must be overcome but Emery has already been active in the transfer market, recruiting forward Hatem Ben Arfa from Nice, Belgium defender Thomas Meunier from Club Brugge and his former charge at Sevilla, midfielder Grzegorz Krychowiak.
Regarding the latter, he said: "We had our needs mostly covered but the team needed a defensive specialist in midfield and Krychowiak corresponds to this need.
"The club have made good recruitments but we have adjustments still to make - we are seeking the perfect attacking profile.
"(Edinson) Cavani has a big opportunity, with the departure of Zlatan, to become a reference point for the team's attack."
Speculation suggests Real Madrid's out-of-favour Colombia playmaker James Rodriguez could be the next recruit but Al-Khelaifi insisted there have been no talks with the player or his club, adding: "It's not true at all."
