Forster apparently injured his arm and was sent back to Southampton for treatment as a precautionary measure, said the club.
This could potentially clear the way for Joe Hart to start for England after a turbulent couple of weeks for the goalkeeper, who has left Manchester City on loan to Torino after being ousted as part of Pep Guardiola's overhaul at the Etihad Stadium.

Both Hart and Burnley keeper Tom Heaton are named in Sam Allardyce's first England squad as new manager, and it was announced on Thursday that Southampton's Alex McCarthy would replace his team-mate, Forster.
At a press conference on Thursday, midfielder Adam Lallana made no mention of Forster's injury, but spoke of the renewed enthusiasm within the team following the appointment of Allardyce.
The Liverpool player said: "The training's been very enjoyable and the lads are buzzing, seems to be full of enthusiasm.
"Obviously you want to impress your new boss, and you don't just do that for your clubs," he added "It's important that you do that when you're here training with him."
Speaking about Allardyce's management credentials, the 28-year-old said: "He's been very good, his management skills seem brilliant and he's got bags of experience, so I'm looking forward to it."

Who is Alex McCarthy?

Forster's replacement in Allardyce's squad, Alex McCarthy, is also his new team-mate at Southampton, having joined the side during the summer transfer window.
The 26-year-old joined Southampton from Crystal Palace, for whom he made seven appearances last season.
McCarthy, who has three England caps at under-21 level, has yet to make an appearance for the senior team, though he was named in the senior squad for friendlies against Republic of Ireland and Brazil in 2013.
