The Stoke City right-back received his first international call-up for over two years when interim manager Gareth Southgate named his first England squad on Sunday.
But two days later and the 32-year-old has been forced to drop out, unfortunately missing what is likely to be one of his last chances to wear the England colours.
Johnson has been replaced in the squad by young Burnley defender Michael Keane. The Clarets centre-back featured at under-19 and U20 level for his country before making 16 appearances for the U21s under Southgate's tutelage.
Keane’s first full call-up means that the squad has just one recognised right-back, with Tottenham’s Kyle Walker likely to start both matches in the absence of the injured Johnson and regular pick Nathaniel Clyne.
The 23-year-old former Manchester United youngster played a starring role in helping Burnley reach the Premier League last season and has been subsequently linked with a £25m transfer to Chelsea.
His club manager Sean Dyche insists that Keane is not for sale and hopes to build his defence around the ball-playing centre-back as the Clarets look to establish themselves in the top-flight.
Keane joins Chris Smalling, John Stones, Phil Jagielka and Gary Cahill as the recognised central defenders in the squad.
