The Huddersfield loanee was removed at half-time in Latics' 0-0 draw with Walsall in Sky Bet League One, but followed that up with a double in the 3-2 win over Crewe three days later.
"He was obviously disappointed to come off at half-time on Saturday, and he's answered that in the right way by producing a great performance and backing it up with goals," said Caldwell.
"I thought he was superb - his movement, when he's like that, makes him hard to mark. He arrives in the box at the right time, and he took his goals well. It's a shame he didn't score more."
The tie at Gresty Road also saw the return of Grant Holt as a second-half substitute for his first appearance in 10 months following a long-term knee injury.
The 34-year-old could now be in line to make his first league appearance for Wigan since Boxing Day 2013 when Latics travel to Bury this weekend.
"He provided the team with a bit of impetus in the game in terms of his hold-up play, his experience; he made good decisions at the right time and that's what he brings," Caldwell added.
"It's another step closer to his full fitness. It's as good as I've seen him look in terms of his movement. He lasted the half an hour well and he's a step closer to starting."
