Alan Smith and Stewart Downing supplied the goals, though McClaren reserved special praise for striker Michael Owen, who made his first international appearance since recovering from a long-term knee injury
"Albania showed early on they are a decent side and it was going to be a decent test for us," he told Sky Sports.
"We did everything right and the players can be proud. There was a great spirit during the week and you could see that in the way they played.
"His [Michael Owen's] overall performance was very good, it was just the goal, the icing on the cake that was missing."
McClaren would not be drawn on whether or not David Beckham would be recalled to the England squad, merely stating:
"We will look, but one or two have thrown themselves forward.
"You will find out at 12 o'clock tomorrow. It's a football decision and it will be made tomorrow."
