Johnson, out of work since being sacked by Yeovil earlier this year, was the shock appointment as the Robins' fourth manager of the season on Monday evening on a deal until the end of the season.
Cheltenham sit rock-bottom of League Two and are two points from safety having won just one of their last 15 matches and Johnson, who met his new squad for the first time on Tuesday morning, is relishing the final seven games, starting with Good Friday's vital clash against York.
"I was asked if I could help and I've always said previously I've liked the club and they've always treated me well when I've come to games," he told the club's official website.
"They've always looked after players when I've loaned them here so I was comfortable.
"It would be nice to keep Cheltenham in the division because that is really important. It is a club that should be in the Football League. I said yes I would help and I'll do my best to get to that aim.
"The mission statement is obviously to get out of the relegation zone and keep Cheltenham up, if I didn't think there was a chance of doing that then I wouldn't be here now.
"The exciting part of taking on the job is that your first game is a cup final. This is a key game because it is a six-pointer and we could drag them back towards us. If we can get a result or a good performance then the believe starts coming into play."
