Lavery, who has missed the first half of this term due to a knee injury sustained during pre-season, scored twice for the development squad in midweek and could be involved following Gary Taylor-Fletcher's return to parent club Leicester.
Giles Coke has been ruled out for a further three weeks due to the Achilles injury that has kept him out of recent matches and fellow midfielder Sam Hutchinson (knee), plus defenders Joe Mattock (ankle), Lewis Buxton and Kamil Zayatte (hamstring) are still sidelined.
The Owls have scored only one goal in their last seven matches and are bidding for their first league win in 11.
Ben Watson will be pushing to continue on the comeback trail when Wigan travel to South Yorkshire.
The midfielder featured for the first time since breaking his leg in February when coming on for the final 10 minutes of last week's 1-1 draw with Middlesbrough and played almost a full game in a development league fixture on Tuesday.
James Tavernier, Thomas Rogne, Rob Kiernan, Emyr Huws, Andy Delort and Oriol Riera also come into contention for a recall after figuring in that midweek 4-0 defeat of Morecambe.
With Chris McCann having made his first start for eight months versus Boro, new manager Malky Mackay has a welcome headache over team selection.
