Real Madrid set a new Spanish record of 40 games unbeaten as Karim Benzema's last-gasp goal against Sevilla earned a 3-3 draw, completing a 6-3 aggregate win in their Copa del Rey clash.
The streak looked set to end at 39 games, with the hosts the better side for much of the match, only for the Frenchman to find the back of the net with a stoppage time strike, following on from Sergio Ramos’ Panenka penalty just minutes before.
Cristiano Ronaldo was rested for the game by Zinedine Zidane, with Jorge Sampaoli also making changes to his starting line-up with one eye on the weekend’s Liga clash between the same two clubs. But second string teams didn’t result in a second string clash.
Both Sevilla and Real Madrid contributed to what was an exhilarating match, with Stevan Jovetic enjoying an impressive debut, scoring just nine minutes after coming off the bench. The former Manchester City striker deserved a win to mark his performance.

TALKING POINT

Is Stevan Jovetic the striker Sevilla have been waiting for? While Sevilla have enjoyed a successful season so far, qualifying for the last 16 of the Champions League and competing at the top end of La Liga, they have lacked a true frontman. And so Jovetic’s debut display will have been hugely encouraging to Sampaoli. The Montenegrin striker was impressive from the moment he came off the bench and will surely be an important player for Sevilla for the rest of the season.

MAN OF THE MATCH

Matias Kranevitter (Sevilla): The Argentine has struggled to make an impression since making the move to Spain, first with Atletico Madrid then with Sevilla. But this was Kranevitter’s best performance to date, imposing himself in the centre of the pitch, providing his team with drive while also dictating and directing Sevilla’s play. Finally, he showed why so many rated him so highly in South America.

KEY MOMENTS

10’ - GOAL! Sevilla 1-0 Real Madrid. There's the first goal and Sevilla are back in the tie. Sarabia's cross into the area was wicked and caused Danilo to head home into his own net as he tried to deal with it.
27’ - ALMOST A BIZARRE GOAL! That was almost one of the strangest goals of the season. Soria was quick off his line but blasted his clearance straight into Mariano. He was lucky though as it bounced wide.
49’ - GOAL! Sevilla 1-1 Real Madrid. What a sensational goal! Asensio took the ball from well within his own half, beating Kranevitter, forcing his way into the box and squeezing a finish under the keeper.
