The Ghana international's moment of insanity came in the Ligue 1 clash against Guingamp at the weekend.
Waris was taken out by a tackle from Guingamp's Jimmy Briand, a challenge that was not considered a foul by the match officials.
The 24-year-old Waris saw it differently, however: he launched himself at Briand in catastrophic fashion, earning an instant red card for his assault.
The French league extended the automatic ban from two to six matches given the nature of the offence - but even Waris himself is mystified at how a normally cool-headed player lost the plot so spectacularly.
"What happened on Saturday is strange, crazy. This is the first time in my life that I have got angry like that, on the pitch or off it," he told told Ouest France.
"I still wonder how I could respond like that, although there were causes. The guy fouled me. He was not sanctioned and I have a bad reaction to severe tackles.
"I should not have done it, but I had no intention of hurting him or to ‘kill’ him. I just wanted to scare him.”
