There had been intense speculation that the Blues wanted to bring Romagnoli in, after a series of failed bids for Napoli defender Kalidou Koulibaly.
However Milan have addressed reports of a possible move by confirming that there was a bid but there would be no transfer, adding that they maintain good relations with the London club.
The statement in full read:
"AC Milan received an important financial offer from Chelsea for our player Alessio Romagnoli,

"The player is not for sale, so the offer will not have any impact. We thank Chelsea, a club with which Milan always continues to have excellent sporting relations.”
New Chelsea manager Antonio Conte has made it clear that he wants to sign a new centre-back, but so far he has been unable to secure reinforcements in that area.
Captain John Terry and Gary Cahill have started both Premier League games so far, with Kurt Zouma still recovering from injury and Branislav Ivanovic deployed at right-back.
Chelsea have won both of their games 2-1 and they face newly promoted Burnley at home on Saturday.
