Giovinco stunner voted by Eurosport viewers as MLS Goal of the Year

Giovinco’s sensational effort for Toronto FC against New York Red Bulls on 14 October 2015 claimed a whopping 40% of the vote to secure the accolade ahead of four other contenders from Obafemi Martins (Seattle Sounders FC), Krisztián Németh (Sporting Kansas City), Juan Agudelob (New England Revolution) and Didier Drogba (Montreal Impact).

Giovinco picked the ball up on the left wing and beat two opponents before wrong-footing two defenders with an outrageous dummy, then unleashed an unstoppable left-footed shot into the top right corner of the net.

The goal sealed a win that took Toronto FC into the MLS playoffs for the first time in their history.

Portland’s triumph in the final rounded off the 20th MLS season which – boosted by the arrivals of icons such as Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard, Andrea Pirlo and David Villa – provided fans worldwide with months of thrilling action since kicking off on 7 March.
