Jose Baxter scored two penalties with Che Adams also converting a spot-kick. Matt Done and Stefan Scougall were United's other scorers while Jon Stead netted County's consolation.
Adkins said: "We played well and scored some good goals. There is a lot of football to be played and a win builds confidence. We've got to use that in a positive manner going into Saturday's game.
"Everyone has got to keep working hard because competition for places is important.
"There was only Neill Collins who was available for selection tonight. While we've got a big squad of players, there are still a lot of players unavailable for selection, for one reason or another.
"We've got people coming back like Matt Done and Paul Coutts. We know Matt's capabilities and he looked lively and that was a real positive. It's a shame that he got injured so early in pre-season.
"The only real disappointment is not keeping a clean sheet, but the goal they scored was actually off-side."
Notts County boss Ricardo Moniz said: "We had big ambitions to win tonight. I thought the first penalty was very soft. The referee didn't give it but the linesman did.
"I still had the feeling at 3-1 that if we made it 3-2, anything was possible.
"Big respect to them because they played a fantastic game. They played fantastic football, it must be said. It was explosive play.
"The other penalties came as a result of one-on-ones where the opponents were better. We couldn't defend the against the speed. We have to stand up and defend.
"It is a big learning process for Haydn Hollis (who was sent off)."
