Moussa Sissoko and Jonas Gutierrez finally ended Newcastle's 10-game winless run at the most crucial of times to keep the club in the Premier League and seal Hull's relegation.
In a role reversal from a similar survival scenario six seasons ago, Newcastle were able to get their first three points in what seemed like an eternity to render the result at the KC Stadium between Hull and Manchester United - which ended goalless - moot.
An enjoyable, open game with a consistently fast tempo saw the home side - the only one of the two on the St James's pitch with something to play for - enjoy the better of the chances, but it wasn't until the second half that they really stepped it up.
And as West Ham - whose manager Sam Allardyce was told he would not have his contract renewed immediately after the game - sat back and and made their lack of investment in the contest apparent, Sissoko leapt highest to power home the opening goal with his head.
Even at 1-0, the game belonged to the hosts and though they somehow squandered a remarkable 4-on-1 counter-attack as Vurnon Anita found goalkeeper Adrian rather than one of three team-mates with his goalmouth cut-back, Gutierrez rose as a fitting hero moments later with a fierce low drive from distance.
Gutierrez was left fighting for his life after being diagnosed with testicular cancer and was receiving chemotherapy as recently as October, but he finally gave Newcastle room to breathe in what may be his last act with the club.

KEY MOMENTS
3' - Penalty shout! Valencia collects a Jenkinson cross and claims he is taken down by Williamson - the referee is not convinced and play continues. On the replay, it does look like Valencia had a case.
18' - Double chance! Amid applause for the Newcastle fans who died last summer during the pre-season tour, Gutierrez dances past two tackles inside the 'D' and has a fierce shot blocked before Janmaat fires low and wide by a couple of inches. Another good spell for the hosts.
51' - BEST CHANCE SO FAR! Janmaat sprints onto a long through ball down the right and superbly takes the first touch away from Cresswell before looking up and picking out Riviere... who somehow fails to convert from four yards out.
54' - GOAL NEWCASTLE! Newcastle 1-0 West Ham! Sissoko heads the Magpies ahead and it was coming. Been all Newcastle since the second half started. Could be vital!
67' - All Newcastle! Riviere takes on the back line after a Hammers error but has his shot closed down. Sorry Hull fans but West Ham don't look to be in any mood to help out...
84' - UNBELIEVABLE! West Ham screw up a short set-piece routine and Newcastle bomb forward on the break with FOUR players against Adrian. Somehow, they manage to screw it up and allow Adrian to get hands on the attempted Anita cut-back for the tap-in.
85' - GOAL! GUTIERREZ! NEWCASTLE ARE SAFE! Newcastle 2-0 West Ham! Low speculative drive from outside the box beats everyone including Adrian!

TALKING POINT
Can Newcastle really move forward in their current state? It's a wonderful day for long-suffering Magpies fans, sure. But this big win papers over a lot of cracks. Newcastle could have secured safety 11 games ago and yet dragged themselves into the dogfight, becoming the last team to successfully stave off relegation. John Carver and Mike Ashley have both publicly said today they want to bring success to Newcastle, but who's to say they won't simply do what they did this season - that is, just enough to keep the cash rolling in?
MAN OF THE MATCH
Jonas Gutierrez (Newcastle) - A fully-deserved moment at the end of the big game for the club, for a man whose emotional roller-coaster runs far deeper than the last 11 games for Newcastle United. Far from being awarded MOTM for sealing their survival with an emotional first goal in two years, Gutierrez was the personification of the 'stay calm and don't overthink this' mentality John Carver said was crucial if the Magpies were to secure their own safety. And they did.
