Buying Petr Cech addressed a key weakness for Arsenal and proved Wenger can recruit at the top of the market. Sadly, he failed to take on board either of these lessons when it came to all other areas of his squad, leaving Arsenal in the preposterous position of being the only club in the top five European leagues not to sign an outfield player this summer. If only Karim Benzema had been up for it…

Villa’s Francophile summer saw them return to Ligue 1 time and again for new recruits but the loss of Benteke to Liverpool left a hole in the squad that Tim Sherwood could not plug. Failed moves for Dimitar Berbatov and Emmanuel Adebayor leave them short of a frontline striker of palpable quality.

Pedro (Chelsea) v WBA

Oh dear. Let’s start with Pedro and acknowledge that he is a fantastic signing who makes Chelsea a more dangerous team. But reported moves for John Stones and Paul Pogba evaporated and deadline day was marked by the arrival of two defenders of dubious quality. A cry for help from Jose Mourinho with his side struggling for form? It certainly wasn’t a great look in the face of Manchester City’s transfer onslaught.
Ins: Asmir Begovic (Stoke), Nathan (Atletico Paranaense), Danilo Pantic (Partizan), Radamel Falcao (Monaco), Pedro (Barcelona), Baba Rahman (Augsburg), Kenedy (Fluminense), Papy Djilobodji (Nantes), Michael Hector (Reading)

Yohan Cabaye celebrates scoring the third goal for Crystal Palace

Cabaye was arguably the signing of the summer by any club as he became the poster boy for the new, or at least significantly altered, power dynamic in European football. Sako has also had a good impact and Alan Pardew can be very content with his summer’s work. Palace are an awful lot stronger than they were at the end of last season.
Ins: Yohan Cabaye (PSG), Alex McCarthy (QPR), Patrick Bamford (Chelsea, loan), Bakary Sako (Wolves), Connor Wickham (Sunderland)
Outs: Lewis Price (Sheffield Wednesday), Stephen Dobbie (Bolton), Jerome Thomas, Owen Garvan, Peter Ramage (all free), Glenn Murray (Bournemouth), Adlene Guedioura (Watford)

Everton

John Stones and Roberto Martinez

A solid transfer window from Everton in which their greatest success was keeping John Stones from the clutches of Chelsea. Few clubs could resist multiple big offers from Roman Abramovich and a transfer request from the player to keep hold of a young talent but Everton have bucked the trend, to their credit. Deulofeu and Cleverley look neat additions to the squad while Funes Mori is an interesting one on deadline day, costing £9.5m.
Ins: Gerard Deulofeu (Barcelona), David Henen (Olympiakos), Tom Cleverley (Manchester United), Ramiro Funes Mori (River Plate), Aaron Lennon (Tottenham)

Christian Benteke celebrates his goal for Liverpool against Bournemouth

As so often with big squad renewals of this kind, it still needs to come out in the wash. But Gomez has looked bright, Milner and Clyne are solid Premier League performers and Christian Benteke is a striker of real quality, so we have this down as a successful window, even taking into account the loss of Sterling. Firmino still has it all to prove, although he’s shown flashes of quality.
Ins: Christian Benteke (Aston Villa), Roberto Firmino (Hoffenheim), Nathaniel Clyne (Southampton), Danny Ings (Burnley), Joe Gomez (Charlton), James Milner (Manchester City), Adam Bogdan (Bolton)

Manchester City's Raheem Sterling

After rightly getting stick for last season’s poor performance in the transfer market, albeit hamstrung by FFP considerations that no longer apply, City have outmanoeuvred the rest of the pack with a brilliant summer’s work. Sterling and De Bruyne could be two of the most exciting and dangerous young players in England this season and putting them either side of David Silva is a wonderful prospect. They look a team reinvigorated – and all it took was nearly £150m.

Manchester United

United have made some excellent signings, bringing in the young talents of Memphis, Martial, Darmian and Schneiderlin coupled with the experience of Schweinsteiger. But they managed to alienate and then fail to sell David De Gea and have left the struggling Wayne Rooney horribly exposed with only Martial as any real back-up. Another centre-back was also required and they never signed their world-beater despite trawling Europe for one so, despite spending nine figures, they are still left with real weak points in their squad. Another up and down window for Ed Woodward, to put it kindly.

Mike Ashley finally got his cheque book out to add quality to the Newcastle squad and although Mitrovic might be the most reckless player the Premier League has ever seen, Thauvin and Wijnaldum should bring quality to the Newcastle attack. They are stronger now than they were at the start of the summer.

Prior to Monday evening, it was hard to envisage Norwich fans getting too excited about their club’s transfer dealings. That's all changed though following the arrival of Mbokani, who boasts a hugely impressive goal record. For supporters who made the weekend trip to Southampton, Cameron Jerome’s benching can’t come soon enough.

Southampton

Celtic's Virgil van Dijk looks dejected after conceding at Malmo

Typical Southampton: selling their best players for a tidy sum, then recruiting new stars on the cheap. Cedric and Romeu have been among Saints’ star performers, filling the space vacated by Clyne and Schneiderlin respectively, while deadline day signing Van Dijk was the final addition they so desperately needed after Toby Alderwierald’s exit in defence. But their biggest deal of the summer? Keeping Victor Wanyama. His head might not be right at the moment, but expect him to be back destructing play after the international break.
Ins: Jordy Clasie (Feyenoord), Juanmi (Malaga), Cedric Soares (Sporting), Cuco Martina (Twente), Maarten Stekelenburg (Fulham, loan), Steven Caulker (QPR, loan), Oriol Romeu (Chelsea), Virgil van Dijk (Celtic)

Stoke's Xherdan Shaqiri warms up before the match

Be honest… Hands up who genuinely thought Stoke could pull off the Shaqiri deal? Not even the Swiss international has his arm raised. Here was a man with Champions League and World Cup pedigree, and yet Mark Hughes made it happen. Chuck in Wollscheid, Van Ginkel and Afellay and it’s hard to foresee how it could have gone any better for Stoke. Even the loss of Begovic hasn’t unsettled them, with Jack Butland stepping up as a more than capable replacement.
Ins: Joselu (Hannover), Philipp Wollscheid (Bayer Leverkusen), Marco van Ginkel (Chelsea, loan), Shay Given (Aston Villa), Glen Johnson (Liverpool), Jakob Haugaard (FC Midtylland), Moha El Ouriachi (Barcelona), Ibrahim Afellay (Barcelona), Xherdan Shaqiri (Inter), Sergio Molina (Real Madrid)

Bafetimbi Gomis celebrates with Andre Ayew after scoring the second goal for Swansea against Manchester United

How do Swansea keep on improving season after season? This year’s sensation is Ayew, who already has three Premier League goals and an early contender for assist of the season against Manchester United. The other additions are more unknown, although Eder could prove useful in attack. They're stronger than last season and could threaten the top six.

Has something happened to Daniel Levy? Spurs were ominously quiet on Deadline Day, secretly hoping Saido Berahino would pull a Peter Odemwingie and drive down to London. He didn’t, leaving them hopelessly short in attack and Alderweireld as their only addition of real quality. One cause for celebration, however, is that they kept hold of Hugo Lloris, Christian Eriksen and Harry Kane. Still, the conclusion is a bleak one.

Watford's Etienne Capoue heads over against Southampton

There’s a real unknown quality about Watford this season. Tipped to go down by many, they’ve made plenty of acquisitions who have been thrust straight into the starting XI. Capoue, Behrami, Holebas and Prodl have helped add early steel to the Hornets, but the long-term performance of this bunch is unclear. Should steer well clear of Derby's worst points haul (11).

Good news: they kept Saido Berahino. Bad news: he’s refusing to play for them again. Elsewhere, Rondon has sped up John Terry's retirement plans, while Evans and Chester are strong rearguard enforcements. If Berahino stops sulking, they should push for a top half finish.
