Chelsea captain John Terry has hit out at rival fans, telling them that they’d love him on their team.
The former England defender is considered a legend at Stamford Bridge and is adored by the home supporters, though it is very much a different story at every other ground in England.
Terry’s previous controversies in his private life and the high-profile racism row involving Anton Ferdinand saw the 34-year-old become enemy number one with rival supporters in the Premier League.
However, Terry believes that fans would act differently towards him if he played for another team. The centre-half has won an astonishing 16 trophies in 11 years during his time in west London and Terry says that the hate would turn into love if he did not play for such a successful club.
“You hope that when you hang up your boots, obviously, you don't want to be hated,” Terry said. “You just want to be known as a very good footballer and someone who gave their all for their club.”
When asked about the vitriol aimed at him, Terry added: “I'm sure that if I was in their team, they (the opposing fans) would love me in their team because I'm one of those players who gives everything to the cause.
“Regardless of what people think or say, you can't take away what I've done in the game. As a person and player, that's for anyone who's met me.
“Anyone who's not met me shouldn't be judging me or the character or person I am but as I say, footballing wise they've had opportunities to see me play and if you're a football person you can make a judgement on whether I'm a good player or not.”
