Chelsea slumped further into crisis as Southampton were inspired by Sadio Mane to a 3-1 win at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea took the lead in the first half when Willian scored another free kick. As at Newcastle, his position lent itself to the cross, but Willian sent in an effort above every other player to find the top corner.
Southampton grew into the match, and had their equaliser when Graziano Pelle - who Gary Cahill had struggled with all half - chested into the path of Steven Davis, and he volleyed expertly past Asmir Begovic. Davis had been left free by Willian and Cesc Fabregas.

In the second half, Chelsea had an appeal for a penalty waved away after Radamel Falcao was clearly brought down in the box. Like Sadio Mane, who should have had his own penalty in the first half, he was penalised for diving.
Southampton took the lead when Mane span John Terry on the edge of the box after Chelsea lost possession, and forced a shot past Begovic. Pelle had his third when Southampton broke from their own half with Mane assisting Pelle for an excellent finish.
Chelsea, and Jose Mourinho, had no answers.

Sadio Mané has provided four assists this season in his seven Premier League games, more than he managed in the whole of 2014/15 (30 games).

KEY EVENTS

10’ - GOAL! Chelsea 1-0 Southampton. Willian scores - Another Willian goal from a free kick far from goal. He aims a shot at the top corner, curling in from about 35 or 40 yards, and the 'keeper is wrong-footed, expecting a cross. He can't get back in time to the shot, which clips the post before hitting the back of the net.
32’ - PENALTY APPEAL - Mane takes a couple of touches in the box and launches himself to the ground. It should be a penalty as Ramires stands on his foot. Mane might get those penalties if he falls in a less ridiculous way.
41’- BEGOVIC SAVE - Mane rides a tackle, slides a brilliant pass in for Betrand's run behind the defence, and his shot is blocked by Begovic for a corner.
44’ - GOAL! Chelsea 1-1 Southampton. Davis scores - A simple goal. A long ball to Pelle from deep, chested into the path of Davis, who cuts across the ball with a volley that edges inside the near post.

49’ - CHELSEA SCRAMBLE - Tadic slides a cross for Mane into the box, and his shot is saved by an outstretched Begovic. Mane has another chance and has a shot from a tight angle. Another chance comes to Mane, another shot is blocked, and then Ward-Prowse sends another effort wide.
57’ - CHELSEA PENALTY APPEAL - Falcao is put through on goal, he wriggles around Fonte, takes a touch away from Stekelenburg, and he's obviously caught by the keeper.
60’ - GOAL! Chelsea 1-2 Southampton. Mane scores - he spins Terry with the ball played into him, has Begovic to beat and squeezes the ball through him.
73’ - GOAL! Chelsea 1-3 Southampton. Pelle scores - Mane breaks down the middle, with Cahill and Terry back-pedalling. He slides the ball out right to Pelle who drives a shot across the goal.

TALKING POINT

Jose Mourinho has run out of ideas. He brought John Terry back, and he was terrible. He brought Nemanja Matic back at half-time, and he had to be subbed after less than half an hour. Ramires is no useful partner for Cesc Fabregas, and Fabregas is a liability in defence and nothing up front. His forwards offer nothing in Diego Costa’s absence. It is impossible to say anything good about this side.

MAN OF THE MATCH

Sadio Mane (Southampton): Linked with Manchester United in the last days of the transfer window, he showed he is everything at number 10 that Wayne Rooney isn’t. Sharp, strong, pacy, able to pass and control the ball in almost any situation. He controlled Southampton’s attack with an unassuming manner, and intimidated Terry.
