Unlike the Rolling Stones, Manchester United can't sell out an 18,000-seat gig in the States

Manchester United were last week named the fifth biggest sports club in the world with a value of £1.98 billion, but it seems like the good people of San Jose haven't heard.

The Avaya Stadium is home of the San Jose Earthquakes.

Either that, or they don't really care for reputation, riches or English football teams. That's hard to believe, we know, when the Premier League's pre-season tours seem to be bigger than Gulliver on his travels, but don't take our word for it.
According to media reports on Tuesday, United home shirts will be handed out for free to locals who buy two or more tickets for their friendly with the San Jose Earthquakes on Wednesday.
While United may have travelled like rock stars from Seattle to San Jose for the match - on the private Jet of the Rolling Stones - the Premier League is not all box office in parts of the US.
Old Trafford and its 75,000-seat capacity is creaking at the seams for fans salivating over United, but Louis van Gaal's side apparently can't sell out the 18,000-capacity Avaya Stadium in California.
The MLS side hope such juicy incentive of free United strips will encourage folk to buy tickets.
You assume this was given the go-ahead by three-times European champions United with their old Nike shirt being out of date at the end of this month.
It still sounds all rather odd.
The game with the Earthquakes was moved from the 62,500-capacity Memorial Stadium in Berkeley to the smaller stadium because the Premier League club wanted to lessen their hectic travelling schedule with around 40,000 fans given refunds.
Louis van Gaal's side meet Barcelona in another friendly on Saturday at the home of the American football side the San Francisco 49ers, a ground that can host over 60,000, but first up is a more intimate affair.
It is safe to say Mick Jagger and chums never had any problems selling out an 18,000 ground for one of their gigs.
