Everton have released goalkeeper Richard Wright and defender Alessandro Pistone after both men drifted into the periphery at Goodison Park. Pistone has not played since suffering a knee injury in August 2005, while Wright has featured just twice this seas
Wright was a £3.5 million signing from Arsenal in 2002, having once been touted as a future England number one and collected two full international caps.
He played 60 Premiership games, but was picked just once in the top flight this season. He played against Manchester United in November due to the ineligibility of Tim Howard, but Iain Turner was selected ahead of him for the return fixture at Goodison Park last month.
For Pistone, it is the end of a seven-year association with the club, for whom he made 117 appearances following a £3 million switch from Newcastle.
"Alessandro and Richard have both been released, although the door is slightly ajar for Richard in that we may need to bring in another keeper," said manager David Moyes.
The club also confirmed that they have offered new contracts to midfielder Lee Carsley and veteran centre-back Alan Stubbs.
