The Iron's first away win of the season was sealed by clinical finishing and condemned Oldham to their first defeat under new manager David Dunn.
Gary McSheffrey had already hit the post before drilling Scunthorpe ahead in the 10th minute with a low shot following Paddy Madden's pass.
Oldham hit back with a quick-fire double just before the half-hour mark, Liam Kelly firing home on the turn and Dominic Poleon forcing in his third goal in four games after Scunthorpe had failed to clear.
It was 2-2 in the 35th minute as Tommy Rowe's shot took a wicked deflection to beat home goalkeeper David Cornell.
Scunthorpe went back in front in the 69th minute when Cornell saved brilliantly from Tom Hopper only for the loose ball to be slammed in by Madden and Kevin van Veen made the points safe with a superb late strike, weaving through Oldham's defence before chipping the goalkeeper.
Robins said: "Being behind was a test of character because of the way we've conceded goals away from home.
"But that's two wins in two games, so hopefully we can look ahead with a lot more confidence.
"There are times when we make poor decisions because the players are feeling anxiety and pressure.
"There's expectation around us this year, but we saw it out really well in the last 20 minutes and showed good game-management.
"I'm not saying they won't slip back into the negative side again, but the players can take a lot from that performance.
"It was very good away from home. It's not before time but, apart from reacting too slowly for the Oldham goals, we were good from start to finish and every one of them made a good contribution.
"We could have been 3-0 up before Oldham scored because their keeper made some outstanding saves.
"We were always in the game and I'm pleased that we finished it off very well."
Oldham boss Dunn had drawn his first four games since replacing the sacked Darren Kelly.
Dunn said: "We were beaten by a team who competed more and won more second balls.
"Too many of our players didn't win their battles and too many Scunthorpe players dominated us, which is extremely disappointing.
"I'm disappointed with the manner of the performance and, other than the fact we bounced back pretty well to go 2-1 up, it's hard to take many positives.
"We lacked urgency and played with a slow tempo. Fair play to Scunthorpe for scoring when we were chasing the game, but we constantly gave them the momentum.
"You don't create chances if you don't compete.
You get poor performances during a season, but the players have to be accountable and hold their hands up.
"We need to be more disciplined, but it's the first little blip since I've been in charge and we shouldn't be too downhearted."
