Imagine if you were coaching a team and they won a match 25-0.
You’d feel pretty good wouldn’t you?
You definitely wouldn’t be expecting to be sacked.
But that is exactly what happened to the a coach of one of the youth teams of CD Serranos, a small club in Valencia.
After his team thrashed CF Benicalap C the manager was relieved of his duties because it wasn’t sporting.
“We believe in encouraging respect for your opponents. After the result, we decided that the manager should leave,” Pablo Alcaide, who helps run the side, told El Pais.
In Spain it is customary that games can reach this level in youth matches, so big can the gap between sides be, but once double figures are reached the score stops being kept.
El Pais also carries comments from the manager’s lawyer who says his client never asked his team to score as many as possible and their opponents just kept leaving gaps.
The defeat brings to end a difficult season for Benicalap, who finished bottom of the league without getting a single point, conceding 247 goals in 30 games…
