Sidney Crosby may be the most recognizable face in hockey but that was not enough to secure him a spot in the 2016 All-Star Game, as the Canadian was left off the roster unveiled by the National Hockey League on Wednesday.

The Pittsburgh Penguins captain is having one of the worst seasons of his career, but was still considered an obvious choice given that the NHL's mid-season showcase is essentially a promotional and marketing vehicle for the NHL.
Under new rules this season, fans picked one player from each of the NHL's divisions to serve as captain of the four All-Star teams while the league selected the remaining 40 players and Crosby was a glaring omission.
Crosby, a former NHL scoring champion and two-times Olympic gold medallist, was held pointless in eight of his first nine games this season but has picked up the pace recently and has scored five goals in his last five games.
In 38 games this season, Crosby has 12 goals and 19 assists.
The 28-year-old Canadian has only participated in one All-Star Game during his career, missing the others due to injury or the NHL's participation in the Olympics when no game was held.
This year's All-Star Game will be held in Nashville on Jan. 31 and feature a revamped format that will see a mini three-on-three tournament replace the traditional five-on-five game.
