Dakar organisers have unveiled a mammoth itinerary for the 2008 edition, including nearly 6000km of specials. It is a huge increase on the 4300km of special stages covered in 2007, although the liaison sections will be scaled back for next year's test.
The race will start in the Portuguese capital Lisbon for the third and final time, with organisers having already said the start would be moved for 2009.
Competitors will then cross over to Morocco and pass through Mauritania on the way to Dakar in Senegal.
Mali has been overlooked due to security concerns on the race, which will run between January 5 and 20.
The 2007 race was won by Cyril Despres, Stephane Peterhansel and Hans Stacey in the motorbike, car, and truck categories respectively.
However, it was marred by the deaths of two bikers; Elmer Symons and Eric Aubijoux.
