Perpignan manager Jacques Brunel has formalised his departure from the club at the end of the season in order to take the role of Italy coach.
Brunel advised his players of the decision on Monday.
It was also confirmed that his negotiations with the Italian federation were in advanced stages.
Brunel could shortly sign a four-year deal to replace current coach Nick Mallett when the 2011 World Cup concludes in October.
Brunel has insisted, however, that nothing has yet been finalised with Italy.
"I've thought about this for several weeks," he said, "but this Italian offer is a unique one at my age. It will certainly be the last role that I could take on - and I want to take that chance."
Brunel, 57, brought Perpignan their first French league title in 2009 and guided the team to the final of the Top 14 last season.
