White trailed 8-6 to Leeds cueman David Grace at Sheffield's Institute of Sport and faced an early exit from the the second-biggest ranking event of the season.
But the 46-year-old multiple World Championship finalist rattled off the final three frames, which included an 81 break in the decider, to deny the 23-year-old European amateur champion.
White had eight breaks over 40 in the encounter and must win three more best-of-17 frame matches to reach the televised stages in Telford later this month.
He now faces young Welshman Ian Preece, ranked 64th in the world.
Elsewhere, Chris McBreen enjoyed the highest break of the day with a 137 effort but still crashed out 9-6 to Lee Spick.
Perhaps the most impressive performance of the day came from Chinese player Li Hang who defeated Welsh prospect Daniel Wells 9-3.
Li turned 18 last month and earned his place on the pro tour by winning the Asian Under-21 championships last year. He faces Joe Delaney next.
