Higginson, ranked 20th, did not make a single half-century as he was hammered 5-1 by Chinese Zhang, who recorded runs of 96, 62, 63 and 68.
Ding Junhui did not face Rory McLeod in Bendigo, Victoria after losing in the final of the Asian Indoor Games in Incheon, Korea on Sunday. The Englishman therefore receives a walkover.
Defending champion Barry Hawkins and home hope Neil Robertson enjoyed smooth passages to the last 16.
Hawkins will next face Tom Ford while Robertson plays Jamie Cope, who won a narrow opener against Martin Gould despite a 135 break from the Pinner Potter, the biggest Down Under so far.
