Hawkins topples Trump to reach Masters final

Barry Hawkins brought Judd Trump crashing back to earth with a 6-4 win over his fellow Englishman in the semi-finals at London's Alexandra Palace less than 24 hours after the world number five from Bristol won a Masters epic against Neil Robertson.
In a match former world champions Steve Davis and John Parrott described as one of the best they have witnessed in the history of snooker, an astonishing six centuries were amassed in the 11-frame joust, with world number three Robertson's 139 in the third frame setting the highest of the tournament so far - only for Trump to eclipse it with his fourth of the match, a 140 three frames from the end.
The contrast could not have been greater on Saturday as Trump went from underdog to favourite against 2013 World Championship finalist Hawkins only to fall flat on his face despite recovering from trailing 2-0 to lead 4-3.
"I'm absolutely over the moon. I'm a bit speechless to be honest," said Hawkins. "Everybody seen how well he played against Neil. I can't believe I'm in the final.
"I watched every ball of Judd's win over Neil. You can't play much better than that. I will take a lot from this performance. This comes close to reaching the final of the World Championship a few years ago."
While Trump will reflect on overcoming Robertson in a classic on Friday, it is Hawkins who progresses to meet the winner of Saturday night's second semi-final between Ronnie O'Sullivan and world champion Stuart Bingham.
Hawkins - world number eight - had never won a match in five previous trips to snooker's biggest invitational event that involves the world's top 16.
Hawkins discovered the level of form that carried him to the world final three years ago where he lost to O'Sullivan. He made runs of 130 and 128 to lead 2-0, clearly aware of Trump's excellence against Robertson.
Trump appeared to have weathered the storm as he won four of the next five frames to edge 4-3 clear with breaks of 51, 58, 103 and 72 as a 74 from Hawkins saw him lead briefly again at 3-2.
That prompted Hawkins into a rousing response as further knocks of 78 and 100 earned him a 5-4 lead before a faultless blue enabled him to slot pink in finally ending another superb match of the highest quality at this year's Masters.
