An opening clash with David Ferrer proved relatively routine for the Olympic champion as he came through in straight sets 6-4 6-4.
The Briton had a strong record against the Spaniard heading into the match with victories in their last four encounters.
And it went to form in the first as Murray broke in the final game to take the lead.
There was a brief fightback from Ferrer as he broke to love in the first game of the second but Murray found his groove and pulled level for 3-3.
And from there Murray went for the kill as he forced two match points at 5-4 which proved too much for the Spaniard to come back from.
But, while he might have taken an early lead in his group, he knows a match with Rafa Nadal will be a stern test.
"It was a tough match with a lot of long rallies and he fought right the way through to the end as always," said Murray.
"He made it extremely difficult for me but he didn't serve as well as he can which helped me and I played a bit more solidly at the end of both sets.
"The court is pretty fair for all of the players and you see a lot of variety in the points.
"You have to try and win every match, every game counts, a few years ago I got knocked out in the group stages by one game or something.
"So you need to try and win the matches in two sets if you get the opportunity which was good for me today.
"Just because I have won my first match there are no guarantees and I need to win the next one which will be tough against Rafa.
"It's going to be a busy few weeks for us with the Davis Cup final but hopefully we can play well here to get ready for that."
