Peaty confident of 50m world record in Kazan

The 20-year-old pipped Cameron van der Burgh to the wall in Monday's 100m final and is likely to go head to head with the South African in the 50m. However, van der Burgh clocked 26.62 seconds in his heat to shave 0.05 seconds off his own world record and will be looking to defend the title he won in 2009 and 2013.

Peaty swam the same time at last year's European Championships – though his time hasn't yet been ratified – and he confident of beating his personal best and once again edging out his rival.

"I did get a good night's sleep once I fell asleep eventually," Peaty told British Swimming. "This morning I just went out there and had fun - I didn't really take it too seriously.

"Tonight I'm going to come back and go faster. It'll be nice to get out there with my full game head on and focus on the race.

"I know I'm fully capable of going faster than my PB."

Elsewhere, Siobhan-Marie O'Connor secured a spot in the 200m freestyle final after claiming 200m individual medley bronze on Monday.

And Stephen Milne qualified third fastest for the 800m freestyle final on his first World Championship appearance.
