Defending Olympic champions Bob and Mike Bryan have pulled out of the Rio Olympics less than a week before the opening ceremony citing health concerns over the Zika virus.
The US duo, who are the most decorated men's doubles pair of all time, made the decision after being knocked out in the quarter-finals of the Rogers Cup in Toronto.
Bob Bryan, who alongside his brother joins a number of athletes to drop out of the games due to fears around the virus which can cause microcephaly in infants if contracted by pregnant women, said: “After countless hours of deliberation, Mike and I have decided to forego the Rio Olympics.”
In a statement, he added: “Though we’d love to compete again, as husbands and fathers, our family’s health is now our top priority.
“Representing Team USA is one of our proudest tennis moments to date and winning gold in 2012 will always remain the pinnacle of our career…We wish every athlete luck in their quest for Olympic glory and hope the Rio Games are a positive experience for everyone involved.”
The withdrawal is a boost for Team GB's own brothers, the Murrays, who currently hold the Olympic silver medal in the men's doubles; Jamie progressed to the semi-finals in Toronto with partner Bruno Soares, and Andy heads to Rio having won the men's singles at Wimbledon earlier in the month.
