The home hopeful, 142nd in the world, lost the first set 6-2 to Japanese qualifier Junri Namigata - 249 places below her in the rankings - before fighting back to prevail 2-6 6-4 7-5 in two hours 38 minutes.
Risa Ozaki, the seventh seed, had no such issues in dispatching Han Na-lae 6-3 6-1.
Second seed Kurumi Nara and former French Open winner Francesca Schiavone are among the names in action on Tuesday.
