It had looked as though the Spaniard would race to victory after working a 5-3 lead in a topsy-turvy decider, but Murray broke with his rival serving for the match.
The Brit tweaked his tactics to be more aggressive, with the approach paying off instantly as he reeled off the next three games to complete a fine comeback and keep his hopes of making the ATP Finals in London alive.
"It was an extremely difficult match," said Murray. "Ferrer deserved to win the first set, I deserved the second and the third could have gone either way. But it's been a great week and I'm very happy.
"He won in Shanghai last week, I won here. Whoever qualifies for the finals will deserve it. It's the best players over the 12 months. We'll see over the next weeks, but it's going to be very close."
Victory carried Murray into seventh place in the Race to London. Last week, Ferrer beat Murray in the third round at the Shanghai Masters.
