Rafael Nadal cruises into second round at Roland Garros

The defending champion rarely looked in trouble against the 18-year-old qualifier as he extended his record at Roland Garros to 67-1.

Nadal is seeking to become the first man to win 10 titles at one particular Grand Slam, but faces a tricky run-in with a potential quarter-final clash against Novak Djokovic coming before a possible date with Andy Murray in the last four and a mouth-watering tie against Roger Federer in the final.

"He risked on every single ball," said Nadal.

You know, that's the way tennis going. Younger, aggressive, hitting the ball stronger and quicker, going for the winners all the time.

"But when the point was playing in normal conditions, I think I played well."

First up is a match against Nicolas Almagro or Alexandr Dolgopolov in the second round.

Nadal broke Grand Slam debutant Halys in the first, fifth and ninth games of a first set that lasted 34 minutes.

Nadal broke again for a 4-2 lead in the second before serving out the set to love leading 5-3.

While never quite scaling the heights as he chases 'La Decima' at Roland Garros, the Spanish player ensured his smooth passage when he broke in the fifth game of the set on his way to a 26th win of the season.
