With men's top seed and favourite Novak Djokovic and nine-times champion Rafa Nadal not on the schedule, second seed Federer, champion in 2009, was the first of the men's contenders to dig their shoes into the Parisian clay.
The evergreen Swiss, who has not missed a Grand Slam tournament this century, almost lost to Falla in the Wimbledon first round in 2010.
The second-seeded Swiss barely broke sweat in his flashy pink shorts and lilac shirt as he booked a second-round meeting with either Spain's Marcel Granollers or German qualifier Matthias Bachinger.
After misfiring a few backhands, Federer, who has not won a Grand Slam since Wimbledon in 2012, pocketed the opening set when Falla buried a backhand into the net.
Federer, who held serve throughout, broke twice in the second, and rounded it off on Falla's serve when the Colombian failed to return a booming crosscourt forehand.
But a major security breach marred the match when a fan walked on to Court Philippe Chatrier and attempted to take a selfie with the 17-times Grand Slam champion.
The Swiss appeared startled as the fan appeared on court before security staff eventually whisked the offender away.
"I'm not happy about it. Obviously not one second I'm happy about it. It happened yesterday in the practice, too," Federer said after the match.
"It's just a kid, but then three more kids came. And today on centre court where you would think this is a place where nobody can come on, just wanders on and nothing happens."
Federer added that tournament director Gilbert Ysern had apologised to him.
"It happened during the finals in '09 as well for me. So I definitely think this is something that something needs to happen quickly. Basically yesterday already.
"Normally I only speak on behalf of myself, but in this situation I think I can speak on behalf of all the players, that that's where you do your job, that's where you want to feel safe. And so clearly I'm not happy about it.
"But nothing happened, so I'm relieved. But clearly it wasn't a nice situation to be in.
"We need to make sure that it's safe out there and people don't just wander on the court like a free pass, you know. That's how it's supposed to be.”
