Gael Monfils and Grigor Dimitrov progressed into the second round of the Mutua Madrid Open with wins over Viktor Troicki and Donald Young respectively.
No. 13 seed Monfils needed just one hour to ease past Serbian Troicki. The Frenchman secured a 6-2 6-0 victory over his opponent, losing just 15 points on his serve throughout the duration of the match.
Tenth seed Dimitrov also moved into the second round at the expense of American Young, who was forced to retire. Dimitrov was leading 6-4 3-0 after just 58 minutes of play when Young pulled out of the match due to lower back pain.
The Bulgarian, who is now 15-8 this season, will face Italian Fabio Fognini in the next round.
Elsewhere, Leonardo Mayer dumped Gilles Muller out of the tournament with a 6-3 6-3 victory in 66 minutes.
Fifth sees Milos Raonic and eighth seed Stanislas Wawrinka – who competed in the 2013 final – are in action later today.
