The world No.1 had to really fight against Jerzy Janowicz in order to make it into the second round as he showed evident signs of his recent injury problems.
There have been plenty of question marks over the Serb going into the tournament as doubts remain about his fitness, and he did not look content during the game - constantly grimacing and wincing.

Highlights: Djokovic beats Janowicz in four sets

Despite taking the first set, Janowicz roared back into the game and fought to take the second set, but at that stage he took his foot off the gas and let Djokovic back into the game.

The world's best player didn't give Janowicz another sniff and he saw out the last two sets relatively comfortably, even though his service speed was still way below average.
Rafael Nadal has had an up and down recent history with the US Open but his straight sets victory over Denis Istomin of Uzbekistan didn't take too long and he's unlikely to have too many games as easy as this in the competition.
The Spaniard hasn't reached a Grand Slam final since 2014, but he has started well here and will face Andreas Seppi in the next round.
Milos Raonic was given one of the tougher opening games for the top seeds as he had to face crowd favourite Dustin Johnson.

The German was at his maverick best with the usual array of drops and lobs but Raonic served well and progressed in straight sets.
Angelique Kerber only had to play one set before her opponent Polona Hercog retired and it was certainly easier for her than third seed Garbine Muguruza who had to come from a set behind.

Britwatch

Johanna Konta made light work of Bethanie Mattek-Sands in her first round game as she progressed to the second round with a 6-3, 6-3 straight sets victory. Many expected the British female No.1 to be tested more by the American but in the end Konta got into her groove quickly and will now face Tsvetana Pironkova in the next round.
The only other British player in action on the first day was Kyle Edmund, who makes his way into shock of the day.

Biggest shock

This honour went to Edmund who despite being ranked 85th in the world managed to knock out Richard Gasquet.

Highlights: Kyle Edmund stuns Richard Gasquet in straight sets

The Frenchman has been struggling of late while Edmund has been enjoying a good run of form, particularly in the Davis Cup and he proved to be too hot to handle for his opponent who hasn't reached a semi-final since February.
Edmund progressed in a straight sets victory 6-2, 6-2, 6-3 and he will now face Ernesto Escobedo in the next round, with a potential third round game against USA's John Isner.

What went viral?

Djokovic's arrival to the party was delayed by Phil Collins of all people, who was the star of the opening ceremony.
Ana Ivanovic, who gets her campaign under way on Tuesday was also impressed by what she saw.
After his victory Djokovic couldn't resist paying tribute to Collins.
Benoit Paire had to go through a mammoth five-setter in his first round, and we can't say we blame him for coming into his press conference afterwards with a bit of refreshment...
Frances Tiafoe may just be 18 years of age but he dealt extremely well with losing a fifth set tie-break. Well done young man, we look forward to seeing him next year.

Star's Post

Britain is gearing up for Andy Murray's first involvement in the tournament after winning gold at Rio, and he posted a picture on Facebook highlighting his readiness.

Match of the day for Tuesday

World No.2 Murray will be getting his campaign to become No.1 underway on Tuesday as he faces off against Lukas Rosol. You can read the full preview for Day 2, including TV times here.
