Playing in his 90th US Open match, Federer started slowly under the roof and was broken in the opening game by the American, who was thriving more so than cowering on his Arthur Ashe Stadium debut.
Tiafoe’s big-hitting continued to unsettle Federer, and the 19-year-old maintained his advantage to take the first set 6-4 after 36 minutes.
Federer did not drop a set en route to Wimbledon glory in July, the Swiss dug deep to take the next 6-2.
