Venus Williams in the ascendant after victory over Barbora Strycova

Venus Williams bounced back from Sunday's defeat to Johanna Konta in the Bank of West Classic final to reach the third round of the Rogers Cup with a routine win against Barbora Strycova.

Sixth seed Williams, 36, handed a bye into the second round, breezed past her Czech opponent 6-3 6-0 inside an hour to put her disappointment at being denied a 50th career title on Sunday behind her.
British number one Konta clinched her maiden WTA Tour title win with victory over Williams in Stanford.
Poland's world number four Agnieszka Radwanska reached the last 16 with a 6-1 7-5 win against Romania's Monica Niculescu and Russia's Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, seeded 16th, overcame American Christina McHale 6-2 7-5.
Seventh seed Roberta Vinci hit back from a set down to beat fellow Italian Camila Giorgi 2-6 6-3 6-4, while Czech 14th seed Karolina Pliskova was given a walkover into the third round after the withdrawal of another Italian, Sara Errani, due to a neck injury.
Slovakian qualifier Kristina Kucova took advantage of Carla Suarez Navarro's fitness issues to win 3-6 6-4 6-4 after the Spaniard had taken a medical time out in the second set due to a foot problem.
Russian ninth seed Svetlana Kuznetsova moved through to the third round after beating compatriot Alla Kudryavseva 7-5 6-0, while there was disappointment for the home crowd as Canada's Francoise Abanda bowed out, losing 7-6 (7/2) 7-6 (7/3) to Ukraine's Elina Svitolina.
Australia's Sam Stosur, seeded 13th, fell victim to an upset as she went down 7-6 (7/1) 6-3 to unseeded Russian Daria Kasatkina.
